It is sensitive to salt so not recommended for planting sites next to roads or driveways where there is snowfall. Red Sunset® Maple is a very cold hardy variety. And of course, the fall show is breathtaking, with red and orange leaves blending to give a sunset effect. Winter buds, clusters of small winter/spring flowers, leaf stems, twigs, and winged summer fruits all carry a red hue. Incorporating rich compost into the planting site will help to achieve the preferred pH, as will planting near conifers. Known as one of the best red maple cultivars, this tree delivers on color. Red Sunset Red Maple, Considered one of the best for early fall color The glossy green leaves provide a very dynamic show, as they turn a brilliant. That is a long way of saying- yes, they can be planted in the fall up to around Thanksgiving as long as they are initially dug out of the ground in the spring. A particularly good cultivar is 'Franksred,' usually sold under the trade name Red Sunset, which grows to a manageable 50 feet and produces fairly reliable red color. All trees can be dug out of the field in the spring, before they leaf out and, in addition, some trees can also be dug in the fall after their leaves have dropped. All of our trees are balled and burlapped- which means we dig the tree, much of its root system, and surrounding soil and then wrap it in burlap and put it in a metal basket- at that time it is ready to be transported and transplanted.
